Suggest CVS Software to use…?

I heard that CVS used to managing the versions of file. For doin my project i am in need of a versioning system. Can any one just let me know what software/product serves/facilitates better functionality.
That too i am interested in free/open source softwares.
Also let me know where can i find the same.

I would suggest 2 things:

1) Use SVN instead of CVS, as it has become an industry standard.

2) If you are a windows user (on the client side), try using TortoiseSVN as your interface, I find it convenient.
